With the cancellation of sports day and the Christmas performance this year the football tournament has probably been one of the highlights of extra-curricular activities for the students. 
Due to our small class sizes we always have difficulty making a grade 5 squad of 9 boys and 1 girl which might make some people believe that we are at a disadvantage when other grade 5 teams are chosen from classes of over forty students. 
This year we had five grade five students; Akira, Leo, Paul, Javin and Linda, with Lake giving support in case of any injuries, and we had five grade four students; James, Reina, Tobey, Bryan and Jackie. Our best starting seven was Javin, Reina, Linda, Tobey, James, Leo and Akira; three girls and four boys, four grade five students and three grade four students. There were also five different nationalities in the squad which was a good representation of the Overseas department.
The question most people ask at the beginning of the tournament is "How can we win?". The answer is as simple as saying "teamwork", but it goes much deeper than that. The students needed to understand their position in the team and the tactics we needed to use to both stop the other team playing and win the games.
Seven-a-side football is a much different game to the eleven a side game, it is faster and there is more space to play in. The other teams in the tournament learn ball control and passing skills that are not used as much in the seven a side game. We needed to learn to kick the ball and run for the ball, pushing the opposition further back and preventing them from attacking.
Individually our players were not as skillful as the opposition teams, but no team were able to get past our three girls, Linda, the Korean assassin, quiet and confident Reina, and Tobey, who has a bigger heart than her small size, who completely dominated our defensive line. In three games we conceded no goals and restricted the other teams to one shot on target. Javin, our goalkeeper, spent most of the time complaining that he had nothing to do. Our forwards of Akira, footballs equivalent of the invisible man; he runs so fast that no one can see him, Leo, the workhorse of the team who never stopped running, and James who will be our goal scoring machine next year, all pressed the 

opposition and did an excellent job of supporting the defense.
The positioning of the players is most important, we needed to control the space available to us and we needed to use the space provided by the opposition. Each player knew their position and as the game progressed they moved in unison to close down the space for the other team. Kicking the ball high, straight and long from our defensive line was also important because it made the other team turn and run back making them tired and preventing them from playing attacking football.
Our first game was won 7-0 against a team that played much better against other teams, the second game was won 1-0 against much stronger opposition. Then we had the final game! We played against a team that, on paper, we should not have beaten, most of their players attend weekend soccer schools and they had won their previous games easily. They had one main player who was big and strong and all of their play went to him. It was important to stop him from getting the ball and playing, we needed someone who could stop a Giant, the most obvious choice was Leo. Leo chased the Giant around the playing surface covering every centimeter of the pitch, whenever the Giant had the ball every other player helped Leo. We needed to push this team back and keep them in their own half, Linda and Reina simply enjoyed kicking the ball as far as they could, tackling and battling for the ball. Tobey played the whole game as if she is twice as big as she is, never stopped running, never stopped fighting, never stopped trying to win the ball. Akira and James both worked hard to make goal scoring chances, but the other team had a good defense, it was important that we took advantage of any  

opportunity, the first half finished 0-0 with the Overseas team playing the better, more organized football. In the second half the opposition hit the crossbar and claimed a goal, but the ball had not crossed the line and their claims were disallowed, almost immediately we passed the ball quickly into the opposition half and Akira scored the winning goal of the game. We made a tactical change by substituting Paul for James and held on for the win.

It is important to recognize the contribution of the whole squad and their classmates, during football training activities the team needed an opposition to practice against. This was provided, with mixed enthusiasm, by the non-players who made the team players work hard. During the game the team was supported by classmates and teachers who continually encouraged the players.
